This episode reminded me of the
oft-repeated investment advice of buy low ... Huh, you say? Well,
Yesterday's Heroes is not, IMO, one of the better JAG episodes. On a graph
it would definitely fall below the axis. But it has enough moments that it
can be seen as a good investment opportunity, hence the buy low.
The story is weak and does not live up to the JAG billing of action drama.
It is not action, unless your definition of action is three oldtimers
ripping off a pathetically punky smalltime drug lord. It certainly is not
drama. So what are the good moments?
It was great to see Ernest Borgnine. I enjoyed watching him and the other
two old geezers having fun in their second childhood. We will all get that
way sooner or later, and the good Lord willing, we will have just as much
zest for life as they do. Their interactions and conversations were smart,
sassy and amusing. They are living proof that indeed old heroes never die.
We get to meet Harriet's parents. And what parents they were! It was a
classic moment, that expression on Lydia Sims' face when her eyes followed
Harm's pointing finger to land on ... Bud. I had always wondered how
Harriet was able to stay in an apartment building boasting a doorman on an
ensign's paycheque. Now we know. She doesn't need that paycheque.
Of course, we have to mention Bud and his line, "Would you like to ride in
a Jag with a JAG, ma'am?"
Speaking
of invitation to ride, Mac's bikini was reason enough for the male viewers
to climb aboard. As for us female viewers, we put our minds to higher
things, like philosophy and such as we made sure that Harm's white tank
top and pants were pristine enough for TV duty. Mac also got to play
matchmaker again, pushing a very reluctant Bud into the next phase of the
courting game, the meeting with the future in-laws. It was cute the way
Bud appealed to Harm, who studiously avoided his eyes whilst acknowledging
certain defeat in the face of overwhelming odds.
This episode wasn't strong in any particular area, and I would not place
it on my list of must-see episodes. But it did have its moments, and as a
loyal fan, I appreciated them.
