With Intent To Die, January 13, 1998

I found this episode to be rather disorienting. Perhaps it was the Admiral's dreams cum nightmares. Whatever the reason, I felt the way Chegwidden was feeling throughout the episode. Everything seemed out of focus, and strange. Perhaps that was the intention of TPTB. I didn't like the feeling, and I consequently did not enjoy the episode.

I most vehemently object to the suggestion that the Admiral is deeply attracted to Mac. I don't like the way this seems to be going, and I doubt that it can ever be resolved in a way that would not embarrass the characters. Granted, older men fall for beautiful younger women all the time. But this is A.J. Chegwidden, the JAG. We've looked up to him, counted on his leadership, and relied on him to set the standards of acceptable conduct. This can only demean him. It is already affecting him - "Get your butt out of here!" he snarls at Mac. Sorry, Admiral, but your behaviour is most unacceptable.

As a matter of fact, the conduct of more than a few of the top brass is less than becoming in this episode. We see adultery, double-dealing, cover-ups, lies, and back stabbing galore. It is not a pretty sight. I prefer to think that our good guys at JAG are above this sort of thing. That's why we like them. They are good guys. Good guys don't do these things. It may not be realistic, but then, this is a TV show.

The atmosphere of unreality was reinforced by the presence of Dalton Lowne. Why is he still hanging around? Why hasn't Mac given him his walking papers already? It is quite obvious she has no real feelings for him. She has been avoiding him, and is feeling guilty as sin about the whole mess. Guilt is dangerous, and will only lead to grief. Be brave, Mac, and give him his congé.
