Well, we've been waiting and waiting and
waiting for this since last May. Was it worth it? Did it meet our fevered
expectations? Yes and yes! TPTB did a tremendous job. Not only did they
resolve the MIA father story in a convincing fashion; they did it in a way
that was anything but formula. Certainly none of the fan speculations came
close. Personally, I am glad that Harm Sr. was not alive because if he
were, we would be straying dangerously close to the realm of soap opera.
We'd have Trish married to two men, the question of what to do with Harm
Sr., etc. This is the better way. He died a hero, and Harm and Trish and
Frank too, have closure and can get on with their lives. Plus DJE doesn't
have to put on all that makeup and play dual roles for episode after
episode.
As
for Sokol, even at the end I wasn't 100% sure of his motivation. I only
have questions. Did he help save Harm because he had genuinely fallen in
love with Mac? Or was it his plan all along to thwart Parlovsky so that he
could build his own empire, and it was convenient to use his feelings for
Mac in the process? I do know that Mac was ambivalent in her feelings
towards Sokol, in the same way that she was ambivalent towards Dalton
Lowne. Guilt figured prominently in the mix both times.
There
was no ambivalence in her feelings towards Harm, and although TPTB backed
off a tad (there weren't too many more of those mooning over Harm
sessions), there is no question that he's the one she loves. As for the
question of whether Harm loves her, that is still not proven. He cares for
her as a very close friend, but anything more? I need convincing.
And
Mr. Big, what can we say? Webb's our man. Of course my sympathy goes to
poor Steven Culp, whose nose was the victim of a too-realistic punch by
JMJ's Admiral during filming. This is what they call suffering for one's
art. The fans loved it, Mr. Culp, if that's any consolation.
Again, they allowed Harm to cry. It's a brave decision and DJE does it
beautifully. It was a very apt ending. Anything more would have been
maudlin.
It was nice to have Cliff DeYoung back as Chuck DePalma. I hope we see him
again whenever they need a tame reporter.
