When the Bough Breaks, November 19, 2002

By Michele Blackburn

A carrier mishap, Shakespeare vs. Star Trek, and the question of paternity make for this episode of JAG entitled When The Bough Breaks

Singer is witness to a mishap involving the snapping of a third wire during a Hornet landing. She automatically charges everyone on the deck that night with the death of an officer. That means seven men are going to be charged.

When the CAG calls the Admiral, he immediately sends Harm down, not to take over but to help. In addition to sending Harm, he sends Mac down as well. The only difference with Mac being sent down is she is to investigate the paternity of Singer's baby. Singer is three and a half months pregnant and won't give the identity of the father. The Admiral makes it clear that if the father is someone on the SeaHawk, he will have her court-martialed.

As Harm, Mac and the Admiral discussed Singer's pregnancy, viewers saw the wheels in Harm's head turning as he thought about who the father could be. It wasn't that hard to figure out. I'm surprised Mac didn't think of it.

Nanci Chambers pregnancy is very evident as is, I noticed, Catherine Bell's. Her uniform is getting tighter.

Harm defends Singer and her pregnancy to Mac. Mac can't understand it because if the father is someone on board, she thought Harm would be one of the first ones to have her court martialed.

He, as well as Mac, come up against brick walls in the case. Harm can't get anyone to speak with him because everyone that was on the deck is in danger of being court-martialed. Mac can't get Singer to admit the father of the baby and she can't find anyone on ship that was 'chummy' with Singer.

When everything fails, the CAG orders Singer off the ship. He doesn't want anything else to do with her and then he admits to Harm that he's going to retire. He's taking the blame for what happened that night on deck.

Harm enlists the help of Manetti to find out the father of Singer's baby. He thinks it might be Sergei, but he needs to make sure. Manetti goes to Tiner. I have to admit I thought she was going to ask Tiner if he and Singer were close, but she asked who Singer hung out with before she left for ship. Tiner tells her Bud.

Manetti brings Bud a fruit basket and asks him about Singer. Bud directs her to a bar that a lot of officers hang out in. Manetti goes to the bar and finds out that Singer was very chummy with a man who had brown hair and non-descript features. She tells Harm about the guy and, instantly, Harm thinks of Sergei.

During a questioning of the Air Boss, a Hornet (F-18) comes onto the deck much like the same incident that occured the night of the mishap. The Air Boss works the Hornet onto the deck and you see the wheels working in Harm's head again as he figures things out.

Calling all of them together, Harm tells them that the third wire was on the brink of snapping because of the force of so many traps. A different Hornet called a RINO came in on the trap last night. It's a LOT more powerful than a Hornet and with the force of the other traps on the wire, the RINO snapped the cord. It was an accident. Accidents happen, Harm points out. The CAG decides not to retire.

Because of Singer's departure from the SeaHawk, a JAG lawyer has to replace her. Mac is picked. This is how they are going to explain Catherine Bell's absence for an episode to film her part in a Jim Carrey movie. As Harm and Singer await take off, Harm mentions he can't get a hold of Sergei. Singer doesn't care and doesn't deny or confirm that Sergei is the father. Besides, she tells him, it doesn't matter because in two weeks she's getting an abortion.

I have a question about that. If Singer is three and a half months pregnant in another two weeks she would be four weeks. Isn't that too late to get an abortion?

Meanwhile, Meredith helps Bud entertain himself until his PEB by giving him several Shakespearian plays to read. The Admiral knows Bud. He likes science fiction. The Admiral's afraid that he won't like the stories, but he gives them to Tiner to take to Bud anyway. However, Bud does like the stories and returns them to Meredith and informs her that each Shakespeare play is like an episode of Star Trek. Meredith thinks he's come up with a wonderful teaching aide and Bud leaves to go home to work on a fan fiction he got the idea for from the plays and Star Trek: TNG.
